New Rules for Obtaining Work Visas in Serbia

Foreigners who plan to stay and work in Serbia can now apply for a visa electronically, thanks to the new regulations. With the introduction of the unique online portal, the process of applying for a visa for Serbia has become faster and simpler, and all communication will occur through digital channels.

Visa applications can be submitted by foreigners themselves, as well as by employers on their behalf, especially in cases involving long-term visas, such as those for employment or seasonal work. Applications are made online and employers must be registered on the e-Government portal to submit applications.

What is required to obtain a visa for Serbia?

Applicants must prove they have stable financial status, secured accommodation, the intention to return to their home country, and adequate travel insurance.

Depending on the purpose of travel (whether it is for tourism, business activities, education, or medical treatment), additional documents such as an invitation letter or accommodation reservation may be required.

Foreigners who come to Serbia for humanitarian reasons, due to force majeure, or state interest may obtain a C visa (for short stays) with the appropriate documentation. This documentation may include medical records, diplomatic notes, or invitations from relevant institutions, and in some cases, a visa may be issued even without additional evidence.

For those planning a longer stay, such as for employment or business cooperation, it is necessary to meet specific conditions depending on the purpose of their arrival. For example, workers must have an employment contract, while independent workers, such as freelancers, must prove their self-employment. Additionally, special categories, such as foreign journalists, volunteers, project experts, and representatives of international organizations, must submit the appropriate contracts, permits, and certificates.

Foreigners who come to Serbia to participate in film or television productions will be issued a D visa with a contract between the domestic and foreign production company, a confirmation from the Serbian production house, and a document indicating the duration of the engagement.

Professionals must provide proof of registration and relevant qualifications.

Family Reunion

Foreigners who wish to stay in Serbia due to marriage or family ties must prove their relationship through a marriage certificate, evidence of common-law marriage, or other relevant documents that confirm dependency on a relative in Serbia. Priests and religious officials must submit a contract or confirmation of employment from a registered religious community in the country. Those coming for medical treatment must provide a recommendation from a healthcare institution, while property owners can obtain a visa for Serbia based on a property deed or other legally valid documents.

All invitation letters, whether submitted by individuals or legal entities, must be submitted electronically through an online portal, which speeds up the visa application process.

These new regulations will allow for a more efficient and transparent procedure for foreigners who wish to stay in Serbia for an extended period.

The implementation of the new rules is scheduled for March 1, 2025.

For those planning to stay in Serbia long-term, the option to obtain a Serbian residency permit offers a simple way to legalize their stay and enjoy all rights in the country.
